How rec therapy is making a difference..

A youth came for services wanting to play soccer though anxiety around being hit with the ball and not being a good player prevented them from joining a team. In the office we developed new thinking strategies to use while on the field and at the gym we worked on dribbling, passing, and steps to block oncoming soccer balls. This exposure and practice helped the youth develop confidence to join a soccer team in Saskatoon.

A young adult was experiencing low mood and boredom, they used to be active in their leisure time but since graduation they were feeling unfulfilled and didn’t know where to start or how to get going. Their parent referred them to our services. We met in the community to facilitate leisure education on how leisure can impact mood. From there, their interests were assessed and a goal was made to try 3 new activities in our sessions. Each week the rec therapist and the client met at a different location to explore these activities and during these sessions, mood and satisfaction were monitored. The client developed the knowledge to overcome feelings of fear which improved their mood and was able to explore community events on their own, which decreased their boredom.

A youth was no longer attending school in-person due to their anxiety. Their goal was to manage anxiety and get back to school in-person to graduate. We met weekly to challenge anxiety at local businesses and then started riding the bus with their peers. With rec therapy they were able to change their thinking patterns and learned skills to cope with anxious thoughts that were holding them back. They started attending mornings at their school.
